Alfred Wheeler
1852 – 1932
The second son of John Alfred Wheeler (1821 – 1877) and brother of James Thomas Wheeler (1849 – 1888), he worked in his father’s studio at Hanwell both before and after his fathers death. He used several signatures A. Wheeler Junior, J. Wheeler Junior and after his fathers death J.A. Wheeler, as well as his own Christian name. He painted almost exclusively for private commissions.
He was a sporting artist who was born in Bath, Somerset, he specialised in dogs and horses and all the Wheeler pictures had a similar style. This, at times, causes confusion. He painted many Derby winners including ‘Persimmon’ who won in 1896. Christies auctioned his portrait of the 9th Duke of Beaufort, on his hunter, with his hounds dated 1882 in 1980.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy and his works have been auctioned throughout the UK and the USA
