Gabriel Griffon
Born in 1866 and died in 1938
Griffon was born in Toulouse, a town in Southwest France. He is best known for allegorical and genre paintings; his garden scenes and his ‘fêtes galantes’ remind one of the 18th century works of Watteau, Lancret etc but interpreted in a post-impressionist, fluid and ethereal manner. His light tones, populated by numerous characters, reduced to a harmonious symphony of light spots and his palette is clear and fresh with brushwork which is subtle yet assured.
An appreciated sculptor, working for a long time in Bordeaux, he then divided his life between Nice and Agen (his house at 17 rue Carnot became the Griffon Museum). He who at the beginning was only a Sunday painter quickly saw his reputation increase.
Today, his work is in collections in Paris, London, New York, Boston and Geneva.
