Jean Carolus

Belgian Painter of genre scenes and interiors.
He was a pupil of Francois Joseph Navez, the Director of the Academy of Fine Art in Brussels.
Carolus spent much of his life living in France.
His reputation is based on his depictions of figures set in interior scenes; indeed , he is known for his jewel-like quality and high degree of finish which he achieves in these woeks. He combines the grace and elegance of his figures with strong use of colour.
He worked in France and it was there that he painted various interiors and one of his best known is a picture entitled ‘A game of billiards with Louis XV’ which hangs in the Museum at Ypres. Other titles include ‘The Proposal of Marriage, ‘The Artists Studio’ and ‘The Letter’.
His works have been sold in auction in Europe, the UK and the United States.
